What's New?
Look for some exciting new changes this fall at Pacific Hills School !
New Direction
Dr. Peter Temes joins PHS as the new Head of School. A former faculty member at Harvard University and president of the Great Books Foundation, Peter Temes has written five books including Against School Reform (And in Praise of Great Teaching), Teaching Leadership, and The Power of Purpose.
New Sound
Music is back! A rigorous elective course during the school day in music theory and performance will be linked to extensive private lessons available on-site at PHS after school, along with new performance opportunities.
New Focus
A longer school day and longer classes for core academic subjects will allow teachers to more fully examine each subject. Smaller class sizes--average size for next year is expected to be about 10--will allow for even more individual student attention. And a change in the science sequence, beginning with biology in 9th grade will make more room for advanced courses by the time students reach the 12th grade.
New Connections to Stanford and Columbia
PHS welcomes faculty fellows from Columbia and Stanford Universities. Professor Uri Cohen, from the department of Middle East Languages and Cultures at Columbia, and Professor Rob Reich, from the departments of Philosophy and Political Science at Stanford, will each be making three two-day visits to PHS during the coming year to work with our students, mentor our faculty, and offer presentations to our parents.
New Beginnings
All-school morning meetings, 7:55am for high school and 8:45am for middle school, will bring focus to the start of each day.

PHS Designated a "Promise Place"
Pacific Hills School has been designated a Promise Place by America’s Promise Alliance (APA). The APA, founded by former Secretary of State Colin Powell and his wife, Alma J. Powell, honors organizations committed to serving youth through the delineated Five Promises: Caring Adults, Safe Places, Healthy Start, Effective Education and Opportunities to Help Others. A Promise Place is a school, community center, place of worship, business, or organization that provides youth with the Alliance’s Five Promises under one roof.
America's Promise Alliance recognizes organizations that prepare young people for success in school and in life. The APA research brief, Every Child, Every Promise, found that children receiving four of the Five Promises are far more likely to be successful, twice as likely to get A’s, twice as likely to avoid violence and 40 percent more likely to volunteer. Moreover, the research showed that receiving four out of five of these basic resources has the potential to level the playing field for youth across racial and economic lines.
“If we are going to truly change outcomes for our young people, then we have got to start approaching their development in a holistic sense. This success model is embodied in Promise Places like Pacific Hills School,” said Marguerite W. Kondracke, president and CEO, America’s Promise Alliance. “By offering young people all of the services they need—under one roof—we are exponentially increasing the chances that they’ll receive the support they need, and succeed.”

PHS Student Animator Wins Award
Dylan Harris, Self Portrait
PHS Senior Dylan Harris, who is planning to study animation in college, is the 2nd Place Winner in the Los Angeles Cedars Rotary Art Contest where he won $200 for his animated self portrait. In addition, Dylan was also 1 of 5 finalists for an Honorship through Warner Bros., a national scholarship for students who will be studying animation. The award was created in honor of Bill Hanna and Joseph Barbera, two highly renowned animators. The process was quite daunting and specific guidelines had to be met to be considered for this prestigious award.
